Description

Carols for Recorder

By John Riggio

12 pages

A collection of traditional Christmas favorites for the young recorder player, with exciting contemporary accompaniments. Includes teacher handbook with reproducible student parts and teaching suggestions, and CD featuring full performance versions (with the recorder part and accompaniment) as well as accompaniment-only tracks.Several songs feature beginning and also more advanced versions.

Contents:

  • Joy to the World (beginning and advanced versions): a joyous fusion with elements of jazz and rock & roll; the accompaniment is the same for both versions. The beginning version uses less complex rhythms [quarter, half, dotted half, & whole notes], with notes D, E, F, G, A, B, high C. Advanced version uses dotted quarter-eight rhythm, with additional notes low C and high D.
  • Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella (beginning and advanced versions): a simpler sounding arrangement, although the recorder part is tougher to play. Acoustic guitar and piano are used for the melody, with accents by wind chimes, cymbals, bells, and triangle. Beginning version uses only B, A, and G. Advanced version adds the notes D, E, F, high C, and high D.
  • Good Christian Men Rejoice (beginning and advanced versions): a Celtic-jazz feel, with the melody doubled by steel-string guitar on the accompaniment. The beginning version is recorded a bit slower, with the recorder part using only dotted half notes; pitches used are G, A, B, high C, and high D. The advanced version is recorded faster; the recorder part adds half and quarter notes, with added pitches E, F#, and high E.
  • I Saw 3 Ships: in a rock style, with layered electric guitars; the tempo is relatively slow for ease of play. Uses notes D, G, A, B, high C, and high D.
  • Silent Night: a pretty arrangement using piano, acoustic guitar, and strings. The melody line is stretched out a bit for ease of play (nothing more complex than a quarter note). Uses notes E, G, A, B, high C, and high D.
  • Angels We Have Heard On High: a fun, rock-style accompaniment. Uses notes D, G, A, B, high C, high D, and high E.
