This program is based on the belief that music is for everyone. The ideas given by Sr. Lorna Zemke develop music readiness in children that can lead into a literacy program. She cites the early childhood research and work of Katalin Forrai, author of Music in Preschool, item# 804962, available separately. Forrai's objectives were to arouse children's interest in music and help them develop specific music abilities. In learning a song, she said children should imitate, recognize and then reproduce (self-initiated).
Zemke provides enrichment ideas for teachers on this DVD. All are based on the First Steps in Music child-developed curriculum. In Part 1, she starts with rhythm and beat and distinguishes between heartbeat (beat) and "the way the words go" (rhythm). Many ideas are given and demonstrated. She also cites the good ideas and reproducible cut-outs found in One, Two, Three, Echo Me!, item# 815108, available separately. Vocal and singing exploration is then discussed, with many ideas and activities demonstrated. Instrument exploration is also discussed.
In Part 2, movement ideas - both free unstructured and structured - are discussed and shown. Many ideas are given for vocal exploration and using props with songs, too. Props such as streamers, scarves, 6' parachute, bean bags, kazoos and pop-up puppets are used. A toobaloo, item# 540070, available separately, would work well with some of the activities.
Througout this DVD, Sr. Lorna Zemke shares her practical wisdom and knowledge she has acquired over years of working with children. She packs tons of ideas and activities into the 2.5 hours. An interview conducted by Dr. John Feierabend is also included. This DVD is for educators and caregivers to watch.
