Musicplay is a play based program - each week features a newgame from which the musical concepts in the curriculum are taught. Children love music games - this is a text that will have your students really excited about learning music! The material supports and enhances science, social studies, and language arts curriculums, and is sequenced for use within Kodaly and Orff programs (some songs include orchestrations for Orff instruments).

Musicplay Grade 5 features affordably priced individual student workbooks that can be purchased separately, item 805031. Over 70 songs are given for each grade, including action songs, singalong songs, folk songs, game songs, holiday songs, and more. Multicultural songs include Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, and African songs, sung in the original languages. Native Canadian songs and games use a variety of voicings and accompaniments in the recordings. An American song supplement is included with this Canadian series. Each song lists the melody line and lyrics, with game or action directions and related CD tracks. Many list assessment uses, curriculum connections, and/ or teaching purpose. The teacher guide also includes an extensive listing of websites for references.

Music concepts taught include identifying different meters (2/4,3/4, 4/4, and 6/8), using pickup notes, major scales, using I-IV-V chords, 2-part harmony, simple tonic orchestration, playing ensemble pieces for barred instruments, playing the guitar or ukulele, 2-part soprano recorder, creating accompanimentsfor songs, identifying phrases as the same or different, use of D.C. and Coda, first and second endings, use and identification of accelerando and ritardando, singing expressively showing an understanding of the text, performing and listening tosongs from a variety of cultural heritages and historical periods, identifying instrument families, integration with literature by creating accompaniments for poems and stories, and more.
