Piano Town, Theory, Primer

Piano Town is an elementary piano method series that uses a multi-key approach to learning by focusing on interval reading skills. Musical terms, concepts, rhythms, and key signatures are gradually and progressively introduced, helping students focus on new skills and information.

Piano Town consists of five levels (primer, levels 1-4), and within each level there are four core books: Lessons, Theory, Technic, and Performance. Christmas and Halloween books supplement each level.

Piano Town Primer Level begins with pre-staff reading in middle C and C 5-finger positions. Students then learn to read on the staff in the middle C, C, and G 5-finger positions. Note values of quarter, half, dotted half, and whole note are used in time signatures 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4. Eighth notes are introduced about halfway through the lesson book. Other concepts introduced are: rest signs, sharp and flat, slur and tie, f and p, staccato and legato, repeat sign.
