Musicplay is a play based program - each week features a new game from which the musical concepts in the curriculum are taught. The material supports and enhances science, social studies, and language arts curriculums, and is sequenced for use within Kodaly and Orff programs(some songs include orchestrations for Orff instruments).

Musicplay Middle School (formerly called Grade 6) features affordably priced individual student workbooks that can be purchased separately (available separately). The teacher guide includes a year plan and an overview by month of skills and concepts to be taught. Songs include rounds, canons, action songs, folk songs, game songs, songs with Orff accompaniments, and more. Multicultural songs include Indian raga; Greek bouzouki; Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and Hebrew songs; and rhythms from around the world. Each song lists the melody line and lyrics, with game or action directions and related CD tracks. Many list assessment uses, curriculum connections, and/ or teaching purpose.

Songs for boomwhackers and for several recorder ensembles are included, as well as blues and rap accompaniments for a composition unit. The CDs have musical selections sampling styles varying from Praetorius to Avril Lavigne. The variety makes the program fun to teach, and fun for the students to learn.

Music concepts taught include identifying different meters (6/8, 3/8, and 7/8), using pickup notes, read & notate major scales and key signatures, introduction of dorian mode, using I-IV-V chords, identifying texture as monophonic/ homophonic/ polyphonic, creating piggyback songs, creating compositions including blues and rap, playing the guitar or ukulele, 2-part soprano recorder, creating accompaniments for songs or poems, identifying sections of a piece as AB or ABA, use of D.S., changing an element of a piece to change its effect, describing how elements of music create the mood,describing the style of the Baroque and Classical eras, identifying the tone color of instruments from around the world, describing the construction and use of an instrument, and more.
